Step 1: Choose Your Season
Constellations are grouped together based on the season when they are highest in the evening sky (and easiest to see). For instance, even though Ursa Major is visible throughout the year, it is classified here as a spring constellation because it is highest in the late evening sky in April. Select the season for your stargazing adventure, and turn to that section.
Step 2: Choose Your Constellation
Within each season, the constellations are organized from easiest to most difficult to identify. Start at the beginning of each section and work your way toward the end. (HINT: If you can already locate some constellations such as Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, and Orion, it might be a good idea to practice with those, just to give you a better idea of how the book works.)
Step 3: Choose Your Location Method
A “Where to Look: Overhead Map” and a “Where to Look: Horizon Graph” are included with each constellation. The overhead map shows you where a constellation is in relation to the Big Dipper, the North Star, and the point directly overhead. The horizon graph shows you which direction to face and how high up from the horizon to look.
Step 4: Learn More
Constellation entries include a detailed illustration of the star pattern, as well as an indication of how bright each star appears to be—not to mention the most significant stars’ names, distances from Earth, and name origins. A full page of mythology and/or history accompanies every constellation of the Northern Hemisphere, as does an illustration of what the star pattern is said to depict.
